The Hub Dairy & Cafe on Ngongotaha Road is a classic local stop for anyone looking for a straightforward, no-fuss cafe experience in Rotorua’s Ngongotahā suburb. Its primary draw is the hearty, old-school pies and toasted sandwiches—the kind of fare that feels like a reliable midday pick-me-up rather than anything overly fancy. People often drop in when passing through or need a quick bite, suggesting it’s a practical spot for commuters or locals running errands.

The atmosphere leans toward casual and utilitarian but with a strong community vibe. Friendly staff and a steady flow of customers, including people who come all the way from nearby areas (or even from Australia, according to some), point to its reputation as a well-loved pit stop. The outdoor tables at the front catch plenty of morning sun, perfect for those wanting a relaxed coffee and bite before heading off, though the cafe sits right on a busy intersection, so expect some street noise and watch for parking challenges during peak times.

The menu centers around classic Kiwi comfort foods like steak and kidney pies, pork rib and cheese toasties, and simple ham and cheese sandwiches. Fans of the pies appreciate the thick, flaky pastry and generous fillings—while some say these pies aren’t the fanciest in Rotorua, they hold their own in Ngongotahā. Prices hover around $6 for a pie, making it an accessible option whether you’re grabbing lunch or fueling a day out.

Parking is a common consideration here—there is street parking nearby, plus a larger carpark just behind the shops accessible via Taui Street. This makes it fairly easy to pop in when hungry, even if the main road feels a little busy.

Best time to visit: Mornings to mid-afternoon, especially if you want to claim a sunny outdoor spot.
Who will enjoy it: Regulars who appreciate familiar, filling pies and toasties, locals grabbing a quick lunch, and visitors wanting a taste of local everyday eats.
Atmosphere: Casual, community-focused, with a bit of hustle from the busy intersection but balanced by the friendly service and straightforward menu.

I wish you could give half stars on the ratings, I feel 4/5 isn't enough but 5/5 is too much for the food rating! Honestly, they're great pies, just not the best in the area (best in Ngongotaha though). Easy access with parking around the corner or on the street. If I'm passing and I'm hungry I'll stop in. Pies at the time of writing are $6 each or thereabouts.

Always love their hot food. And their big cookies at the front counter. Yum! Hard working people..long hours, day in, day out. Those outside tables are a premium spot in the mornings! Heads-up, it’s a busy intersection and parking can be tricky. Luckily there’s a nice big carpark located in behind this set of shops that can be accessed via Taui street -easy as.

Came for breakfast and lunch, Has the eggs benedict not bad for a bakery! Also had the sandwich for lunch and a drink service was fast. Flat white was also pretty good. They know their stuff. Sterling Arnet Kakapo Business Sales
